5 Tips for Staying Healthy This Summer
It is finally summertime! This is the time of year for getting outside, taking vacations, and enjoying the longer days with loved ones. It is also the time of year for sunburns, dehydration, and swimsuits - oh, my!
Staying on top of your health during these warmer months will help to prevent any of these uncomfortable moments so that you can make the most of your summer!
Ways to Stay Healthy and Happy This Summer
Choose your foods wisely.
Fruits and vegetables that are full of water (such as watermelon, tomatoes, grapes, cucumbers, berries, and lettuce) will help you stay hydrated. Avoid foods that can cause dehydration, or are out of season during summer months.
Balance your alcohol intake.
Restaurants and bars have opened their patios, and friends are gathering for outdoor barbecues. Usually these events are accompanied by plenty of libations, much of the alcoholic variety. With the warmer weather it's likely that you'll get dehydrated more quickly, especially if you're drinking alcohol outside in the sun. Be aware of how much alcohol you're drinking and set a limit before you arrive at the bar or party. Alternate drinks with a full glass of water or seltzer with True Black Cherry Limeade.
Bonus tip: Have trouble socializing without drinking alcohol? At the next barbecue or outdoor party you attend, drink one beer then refill the empty bottle with tap water and sip away. No one will be the wiser, and you'll be more hydrated than ever!
Invest in a good water bottle, and bring it with you everywhere you go.
Most of us aren't drinking nearly enough water every day. Purchase a good sturdy water bottle that holds at least 24-ounces of liquid. Double-insulated bottles (such as our "Keeps You True" Thermal Water Bottle) will keep your water nice and cold, without sweating and leaving condensation in your bag or purse. Keep sipping throughout the day, and refill whenever necessary.
Get some new sunscreen, and use it!
Check the expiration dates on those sunscreen bottles that have been sitting under the sink all winter. If they're 2-years old or more, it is time to toss them and restock. When purchasing new sunscreens be sure to purchase the highest quality you can. Your skin is your body's largest organ, and it absorbs any potentially harmful chemicals it may come in contact with. Here is a great list to get you started with natural sunscreens.
Use Apple Cider Vinegar to dress your summer salads.
Not only does it add a zing of flavor, but Apple Cider Vinegar can quell any sweet cravings after meals. ACV helps to balance blood sugar levels, and is a natural probiotic that can aid in digestion and nutrient absorption. Anything that can help reduce sugar cravings while at the same time support good health is pretty great in our book! Although summer is a wonderful time to celebrate and get outside, its also an important time to keep your health goals in check.
The biggest takeaway?
Stay hydrated, always wear sunscreen, and have fun!
